Youth Ministry...
Kathleen White
Youth Mission Statement We the youth at Walkersville United Methodist Church fully believe in the church being a place where youth can feel accepted and loved with open minds. We fully support an atmosphere that strives for youth to have fun and be safe while developing their spiritual journey with Christ. We feel called by Christ to become beacons of light venturing out into a hurting world as stewards of compassion and love.
Welcome Back to you all. It is that time of year when we get back to our old routines with school and activities. I hope you plan on attending youth this year. Just so you know, I am splitting the youth back into middle and high. Middle school will meet on Wednesdays (beginning September 22) from 3:30-5 pm and High school will meet on Sundays (beginning September 26) from 4-6pm.This still allows time for high school students to do homework and have family time. Bring a friend, let’s start to share the greatness of out Lord with people.
Remember Sunday school is back in full swing on August 29. I hope to see you all here.

I am looking for someone from each grade level to be the representative for you group at council meetings. This meeting takes place every other month, and I would like for you to attend to represent the youth. Anyone can attend the Council meeting and as the Youth Council representative, you would be expected to attend each one. We also have meeting s that we take as the council to see new ideas and what’s happening with others. Also as youth council rep, you are to be present at our functions and group meetings on Wed or Sun. I also require that whoever is in this position be in a study because I believe you can’t lead if you don’t know where you are leading. There will be an Advent Study on Thursdays from 3-5 for youth beginning on December 2, 2010. It will run for seven weeks. I know that there are questions about Advent and hopefully this will help to clear up some things for you. Bring a friend, it will be a good time. I look forward to seeing you all. I will have a sign-up sheet in GTH so that I know how many to prepare for.
ALIVE is November 19. If you want to go, you must reserve your spot now. It is open to all middle school youth, so bring a friend. I will need chaperones so get your parents to sign up now. Price for registration is $60. I will keep you posted on hotel pricing as we get closer, and I receive numbers. To be able to attend ALIVE , I am requiring that you must attend at least 6 of the 9 Wednesday meetings .
I am looking for 2-3 people who would like to be involved in doing praise signing with me. If interested, please let me know ASAP so that we can get a scheduled time to start rehearsing. I am also looking to start a puppet ministry. If you are interested in that please let me know that also.
Remember that “SEE YOU AT THE POLE” is coming. It is on September 22 this year. Hope to see some of you there. If any of you would like to help plan it in your school (especially ) Walkersville Middle school, see your counselors about how to do that. AND ON THAT NOTE- CMYFC (Central Maryland Youth for Christ) contacted me to help start up a Bible Club at Walkersville Middle School. They would like to see the youth of the church step up and be a part of this program and as the future of the church I think you should stand up and be recognized for what you stand for . Anyone interested please call me and let me know 240-619-9903 or e-mail me kathleenwhite1@verizon.net.
I am sending some paperwork to each of you and I need it filled out so that I can place it on file for the upcoming year. Please do not lose it, and please be sure to return it to me ASAP. If any of you plan to bring a friend on a trip, they too must have paper work filled out.
To help promote some interest, in the youth group, I am offering dinner and a movie with me at the end of the year, 2010, at Olive Garden. This prize will go to the one who comes to the most youth functions AND who also brings the most visitors. This contest will run from September thru December 19th. We will do it over Christmas break, so that we don’t have to worry about time schedules etc. This is open to HS as well as MS youth . I am also going to be doing drawings at the end of the month for prizes , so the more you are here the better chance you have of winning. The prize(s) .will vary each month.

ASP 2010 TEAM REPORTS
ASP 2010 Team #1 – Fresh Prince of Bel-Aire
Team Members: John Humphrey, Sharon
Rohrer, Drew Roderuck, Sarah Boteler, Shea Rust, Jessica Gilbert Romans 12:11 “Never be lazy in your work, but serve the Lord enthusiastically.”
The family we served this year consisted of parents Ruby and Jimmy, their daughter, Leah, son Gary and Gary’s daughter, Hannah.
Our work was to repair some framing and then install siding on an addition to their home. We were the only team working on this project as it was added at the end of the program. We had only a week to complete the project – which we did successfully except for painting the siding. We gave the family the paint and supplies needed and they will be painting their new addition. Our family was very appreciative and thankful for our service. Ruby even fixed lunch for our team one day – it was delicious and we were thankful! Out entire family was friendly and helpful. The granddaughter, Hannah, especially seemed to enjoy our company and we helped her “adopt” a new friend that found us, Will (Smith), who is a beagle……Our team worked very hard each day – the heat, humidity and bees were obstacles we faced, but our perseverance prevailed (with the help of wasp and hornet spray!). As one of the “college teams” with members the same age, we felt close and able to relate to each other and God on a different level. Hannah’s spirit gave us the energy and willingness to know we made a difference in their lives as well as our own. We may have struggled at first to adjust to our new environment, but realized it was well worth it when the last day came and Ruby cried when we were leaving.
The “character” of the center we stayed in offered less than desirable conditions although the staff was wonderful – very hard working, spiritual and dedicated. Being at a center like this made us realize that many people in Appalachia live in those conditions all of the time, some even worse. This made us understand more about what we were doing and allowed us to feel more fulfilled emotionally when we accomplished what we set out to do. It was as if God was giving us little gifts all week; Ruby making us lunch, little rain bursts, and Will and Hannah to pick up our spirits and motivate us to continue. We finished out the week laughing and crying about all we had done and the memories we made.
The ASP staff gave us this quote: God does not call the equipped, He will equip the called.
ASP 2010 Team #2 – Jumper Team Members: Steve Humphrey, Sr., Leslie Wheatley, Christina Chavez, Rachael Morrison, Bryn Gibson, Nick McGoogan, and Loguan Nagel
Family situation: This is a family with a husband, wife and their two boys Caleb 8 and Ryan 13. Gerald, the father, works hard farming from sun up to sundown bailing hay, feeding the horses, and raising a few livestock. He also cuts grass for neighbors to earn a little extra. Ryan was out in the field every day helping his dad. Patricia works at a head start preparing meals in the kitchen with promises of a promotion to full time working with the children. She has been extra busy this summer taking care of Caleb who broke his collar bone in a tricycle accident with his cousin. The task was to put a room addition on their 2 bedroom home so the boys would not have to share a tiny bed in a tiny room no bigger than your bathroom. The drywall had just been hung. We finished mudding and sanding and painted the walls bright yellow. The door and window were installed and stairs were built off of the exterior door of the addition. We cut, painted and installed all the trim around the windows, doors, and baseboards. We also laid vinyl tile on the floor. We didn’t get to know our family very well but learned a lot about each other. We also witnessed God helping us with issues and guiding us around the fork in the road so we could reach the finish line and completion of our home project. There was no group coming next week to finish what we couldn’t. We were amazed at the friendliness of Hancock county residents from the little old lady who insisted we get in the front of the line at the grocery store “because we had important work to do” to the manager at a campground and retreat who allowed us to get a much needed hot shower and wouldn’t take a dime.” After all, we were there to help her people!
ASP 2010 Team #6 – Orwell (Named for George Orwell, author of the book, Animal Farm, get it?)
Team Members: Adults: Archie Wertz and
Tina Green; Youth Leader: Shelby Smith
