Children's Ministries...

April Roland

We look forward to seeing you in September!

And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.     (Matthew 18:2-6 ESV)

I have to say, that coming to Walkersville has brought some great new things to my life.  I believe God is going to do some amazing things this next year.  I am excited to be here and really looking forward to getting to know each of you and your families!

The new Sunday school curriculum, called 252 Basics for elementary schoolers and First Look for preschoolers, is just one way that I believe God is going to open up conversations for you to have with your kids about God.  There are weekly devotionals for your kids to take home as well as devotionals (shaped as a refrigerator J) for your family each week with the memory verse and theme of the month.  It will be an exciting time as you talk about what you are learning as a family over dinner, in the car, or at bedtime.  I would encourage you to ask your kids what they are learning and what they are thinking about!

The curriculum is from a company called The reThink Group from Cumming, Georgia.  I know many churches in Georgia that have used it for years and really love it a lot, including the church where I am from in Athens!  Here are a few thoughts from myself and reThink:

There are two powerful influences on the planet— the church and the home.

They both exist because God created them.

They both exist because God desires to use them to demonstrate His plan of redemption and restoration.

If they work together they can potentially make a greater impact than if they work alone.

             They need each other.

Too much is at stake for either one to fail.

Their primary task is to build God’s kingdom in the hearts of men and women, sons and daughters.

My hope and prayer is that the church and the family can work together here at Walkersville.  This will happen when families are involved in the weekly conversation about Sunday school, when families join their kids for family nights at the church, and when families are committed to being at the church on a weekly basis.  I know there is a lot going on, especially when school starts and sports are gearing up for the fall.  But, when we make church and growing as a Christ-centered family a priority, this generation of kids will never forget that.  I believe when the church and family combine, we will impact an entire generation for Christ, and they will come to know Him!

August 29: Sunday school and Children’s Church Kick Off!  Be here to experience Sunday school, meet your teachers and join in the fun of getting to know God more!!

September 22: Wednesday night activities will begin!  We will meet in Georgetown Hall from 6:30-8:00 p.m.  The change in time will hopefully allow families to get home and settled before bedtime!  We will be exploring Questions and Answers in Genesis as a group.  I am looking for volunteers to help coordinate Wednesday nights!  Please call the church office and leave a message for April.

More to come in October!  Including the Fall Festival and Trunk or Treat!  It’s going to be an exciting Fall!  Look out for other fun family events, too!

Children’s Ministry Team: I am looking for a few more individuals who would like to partner together to plan, pray and create fun events for the children and families at our church.  Please let me know if you would like to get involved!  Only 3 spots left, and you could be one of them to impact the next generation for Christ!  Call the church office and leave a message for April if you want to be involved!  Email or find me in the office, go get coffee with me (or tea, if that’s your thing), get to know me, or if you have questions, comments, or concerns: aprileroland@gmail.com; church office: (301) 845-9860.

Pathways:  Wednesdays, 7:00-8:00 p.m. in Georgetown Hall through May 19.  All children age 4-5th grade are invited to join us for our mid-week Christian Education Program, Pathways.  Children explore areas of Christian living through Bible lessons, games, crafts, outreach activities and much more!  May 19 will be the last night of Pathways for this school year.

Nursery Help Needed:  WUMC provides nursery service for children birth-2 yrs during the 9:00 worship hour and the 10:00 Sunday school hour as well as for birth – age 5 during the 11:00 worship service each week under the supervision of Nursery Coordinator, Cynthia Jett. Under Safe Sanctuaries Policy we need two adults present with our children at all times.  We need adults willing to assist the coordinator on duty in the nursery each week.  If you are willing to donate your time to spend an hour with our youngest members, contact Cynthia @ 301-845-0134.

If you have any questions concerning the events on this page or would like to volunteer your time and talents in service to our children, contact April Roland at 301-845-9860.
